2010 Turkey Run State Park, Indiana |
|
The boys recently made the journey to Turkey Run State Park for a float trip on Sugar Creek. Our usual luck was in full swing; the area had received over 10 inches of rain in the prior week. As a result, the usually shallow river was running over 5 feet deep and very fast, with lots of debris in the water and no safe banks. It was too dangerous to boat, but we made the best of it and did some impromptu hiking instead. The Troop had a great time at Harmonie State Park this weekend! The weather was great for camping, with cool nights and warm spring days. The new recruits earned their Totin' and Firem'n Chits and even took their first 5-mile hike! The older boys carried a full-size backpack for the first time, and learned a little bit about lightweight camping, food prepration and health on the trail. Everyone also got to demonstrate their new first aid & rescue skills when Mr. Herdegen sprained his ankle, Mr. Mayo suffered from heat exhaustion, and poor Mr. Gibson got lost in the woods while taking a potty break. Throw in jokes and stories around the campfire, games of "Capture the Flag" and "Kick the Can," and a few rounds of "War" with a deck of cards, and the boys enjoyed themselves quite a bit! 2008 Smoky Mountains trip |
|
The Troop had a great time in the Smokies this July. The weather was (mostly) great and the campsite was fantastic. In two hikes (one to Andrews Bald and the other to Hen Wallow Falls), we covered about 8 miles over tough terrain. The boys did an excellent job on the trail and made the trips with ease. We saw a lot of great scenery and even a snake or two. Much to the disappointment of the Scouts (and the relief of the Scoutmaster), we did not run into any bears during the trip. We also took a leisurely inner tube float trip and as an exciting raft ride down the Upper PIgeon River. Not everyone knew what to expect on the ride, but by the end everyone was ready to do it again! One of the boys got chucked out of the raft after an impact with a rock (a common occurrence), but he and his fellow Scouts remembered their training and got him back into the boat in short order. Even grumpy Mr. Gibson had a good time on the river. Click "read more" below to see some photos from the trip (lots of pictures; may take time to load!). |

Troop rummage sale results |
the sales for our rummage sale totaled a whopping $2606.95! We had a great turnout and lots of good deals were made. The money will be put to a lot of good use making sure we have the equipment we need and, more importantly, we'll do some great stuff!
Speaking of the rummage sale, we all owe a great big thanks to Mrs. Herdegen for her hard work and time. We could not have gotten everything done without her. Many thanks also to all of the parents, relatives and siblings who also helped along the way; their assistance was invaluable and very much appreciated. |
